Under the $100 dollar mark, you may look at the popular UTG bug buster, but for another 20 dollar bill, you are unlikely to be disappointed with the better Crossfire II.Vortex Crossfire II 1-4x24 Riflescope Adjustments Reticle Focus The Vortex Crossfire II is one of the best budget optics in the $100 to $150 range, backed by one of the industries best warranties. Its by no means a new product offering, but dollar for dollar, you’d be hard pressed to find a better scope for the same price. Any improvements to the Crossfire II already exist in Vortex’s higher tier Diamondback, Viper, Eagle, and Razor lines of scopes. It’s hard to be critical and nit pick a scope that offers such great value and performance for the price point. Outside of a larger objective lens, which has more to do with cost than it does being a fault of the Crossfire II, we don’t have any real complaints about the Crossfire II. Vortex Crossfire II – Critical Observations The scope held zero during the rest of our shooting, and made reaching out on targets very enjoyable for the rest of the afternoon. We didn’t used a lead sled, although it would have been nice. Sighting the Crossfire II was one of the easier sighting experiences we’ve had, largely due to the clear glass, sharp second focal plane reticle, and easy to adjust turrets, but also likely due to the low recoil generated by our AR-15 compensator and light predator rounds. We took our third shot at 50 yards, made zero adjustments, and then finished zeroing at 100 yards. The turrets on the Vortex Crossfire II, are marked for 1/4 MOA adjustments, and provide an audible and tactile click. So there was never any doubt about the adjustments that were made. The tactile clicks could have felt stronger, or slightly less spongy, but they were easy enough to detect, and matched the MOA numbers on the turrets. Each 1/4 MOA turret adjustment made an audible and tactile click. ![]() The turret caps on the Crossfire II are easy to remove by hand, and adjustments were also easy to make without tools. We took two shots at 25 yards to see where the point of impact was and then made appropriate adjustments. The targets were ranged at 25 yards, 50 yards, and 100 yards. To sight in the Crossfire II scope, we set up 3 Birchwood Casey 6 inch reactive targets. When the AR-15 isn’t being used product testing or predator hunting, the Crossfire II can quickly be removed and replaced by a Bushnell TRS-25.īetween the high profile rings, 3.9″ eye relief of the Crossfire II, and the ample mounting options of the AR-15 Picatinny rail, it was easy to achieve a comfortable cheek weld, and quickly get the reticle on targets. We mounted the Vortex Crossfire II 2-7x32 on an AR-15, chambered in 223 Wylde, with high profile quick detach rings by UTG. The Vortex Crossfire II 2-7×32 mounted onto an AR-15. However, we have used a Vortex Strike Eagle 1圆 for years, and it’s an awesome scope, with an awesome reticle. ![]() #Vortex crossfire seriesWe chose the 2-7x version of the crossfire with a reticle that is not-illuminated, so we can’t speak to reticle illumination on the Crossfire series of scopes. Nothing about the Crossfire II would have you think it is a budget scope. The scope feels durable, has a solid matte black finish, clear glass, a sharp second focal plane reticle, and the turrets can be adjusted without tools. It has the fit and finish you would expect from Vortex, but couldn’t imagine you could get at the price point. Right out of the box, we were pleasantly surprised by the Vortex Crossfire II 2-7x32. We knew, or at least had hoped, that Vortex would not sell a bad scope, but we were skeptical about what Vortex could offer in a scope with a $129 purchased price, and our hopes weren’t too high. #Vortex crossfire manualThe packaging included a microfiber lens cloth, and a manual for the Crossfire II scope, as well as a manual for the Dead Hold BDC reticle.īecause the Crossfire line of scopes is third from the bottom tier of Vortex scopes, just above the Copperhead and Sonora lines of scopes, we weren’t sure what to expect. The Vortex Crossfire II 2-7x32 came packaged nicely and securely in a Vortex Crossfire branded box. The Vortex Crossfire II 2-7x32 has been around for a few years now, and while it’s not new, it’s still an affordable and available rifle scope, that may still be perfect for you. ![]() ![]() Mos opens the album with the grand and bombastic “Twilite Speedball.” Produced by The Neptunes, Mos raps over what sounds like a marching band-like horn section, paired with vibraphone and guitar licks. Hell, Mos evens finds a way to incorporate his penchant for mumble-warbling classic hip-hop tracks, an exercise he engaged in for far too long periods of time on Tru3 Magic. In fact, I’d say it does the best job of any of his solo albums at incorporating both his rapping and singing talents. The tracks take elements of everything from Afrobeat to traditional Indian and Middle Eastern music.īut even with the clear Madvillain/DOOM influences, The Ecstatic still very much feels like a Mos Def album. Beat-wise, he enlists a whole host of producers, including Madlib himself and his younger brother Ohno, to provide him with a trippy soundscape. There are still 16 tracks on the album, but barely half of them exceed three minutes in length, keeping Ecstatic running a little over 45 minutes. Mos keeps things brief, often kicking one verse or two short ones before moving on. However, the album still appealed to fans of Mos’ music and is one of the best hip-hop albums released in 2009. With The Ecstatic, he channels DOOM in terms of execution and creates an album more bugged and left-of-center than anything that he recorded previously. Mos had always been a left-of-center, bugged out emcee, and that holds true on even his most “traditional” efforts. During this period, Mos seemed to focus more on his film career than his musical output, and the lack of interest showed.įortunately, The Ecstatic was a return to form for Mos Def, in terms of quality if not style. While New Danger was at least sincere, Tru3 Magic was completely phoned in, the work of an artist trying to get out of his record deal. And then he followed New Danger up with Tru3 Magic (2006), an album that lacked both ambition and direction. He followed up BOBS with the extremely ambitious but ultimately bloated and directionless The New Danger (2004). Unfortunately, Mos’ musical journey got a little bumpy through most of the ’00s. People, including myself, believed it was the beginnings of what was to be a storied career. Between Black Star (1998), his team-up with Talib Kweli, and Black On Both Sides, Mos Def was shaping up to be something truly special: a dynamic and charismatic personality who could rap, sing, and even act. The Ecstatic came a decade after Mos’ Black On Both Sides (1999), his successful and acclaimed debut solo album. Released 10 years ago, its Mos Def’s version of Madvillainy. And it makes sense that he was singing the praises of the Metal Faced Terrorist in this setting, because The Ecstatic is very much influenced by DOOM. While these moments were being taped, Mos was in the studio to record The Ecstatic, his fourth solo project. And I stared at it and I just kept going, ‘…I understand you.’” ![]() I bought it on vinyl just to stare at the album. ![]() “I swear to God, when I saw that Madvillain record, I bought it on vinyl I ain’t have a record player. “Actually, it would be fun, because he rhymes as weird as I feel,” he responds. When someone off-screen then suggests it might be a challenge for Mos to write with DOOM, Mos smirks a little. He stands in the studio, effortlessly spitting DOOM verses, mostly from songs from MM… Food (2014). Note: ‘The Ecstatic’ is not currently available in authorized form via major streaming platforms, hence the absence of embedded audio in this article.Ībout 10 years ago, a video popped up on YouTube of Dante “ Yasiin Bey” Smith formerly known as The Mighty Mos Def showing his love for MF DOOM. JESSICA ROIZįor the album’s title track, named after the principal highway that passes through his hometown of Bayamon, Farruko and José Raúl Gonzalez (better known as “Gallego”) do their own version of Voltio’s classic “Julito Maraña,” both of which sample Hector Lavoe and Willie Colon’s “ Juanito Alimaña.” The song opens with the salsa classic, followed by an intro that welcomes you to Route “167.” Afterwards, Farruko raps about his upbringing in Puerto Rico, keeping the downtempo salsa melody through the entire song. The song kicks off with a folk-like guitar melody, and the sound of a small coqui frog, before transitioning to a mid-tempo reggae and trap fusion, focusing on the importance of coexisting and community. On their second collaborative effort, following the Latin Grammy-winning “Calma (Remix),” Farruko teams up with Pedro Capo for a heartfelt track that pays homage to the humble and hard-working “Jibaro,” a local term given to farmers from the countryside of Puerto Rico. The lyrics talk about his mother’s advice on how your enemies are always closer than you think: “Be careful with the envy, my son, said my mother/ Remember that the enemies come disguised as sheep.” Farruko sings the song in a way that will make fans feel as if they are riding in a truck across Baja California, accompanied by a guitar. The song is led by an acoustic guitar, fusing with his raspy voice and rapping. INGRID FAJARDOīehold, the corrido on the album, with an urban twist - though this isn’t the first time that Farruko has dabbled in the regional Mexican genre. “We started from cero and the business multiplied/ I learned the hard way, nobody explained it to me/ They wanted to take me away and it got complicated for them/ And I ended up burying them, four ‘cubic’ meters,” Farru croons. In the alternative-trap fusion track, where Farru samples Paquita La Del Barrio’s “Rata de dos Patas,” the two artists sing about their challenging road to fame. On “Cucaracha,” Farruko join forces with rapper, singer-songwriter, and Bayamon native Ñengo Flow. With La 167, which was mostly crafted in a workshop near his childhood home in Puerto Rico, Farruko hopes to spread nothing but “good vibes and good energy.”īelow, the Billboard Latin staff recommends some essential tracks. “I believe a lot in new talent and finding a new sound,” he explained. His collaborators include old-school acts, such as Gallego, Tempo, Ñengo Flow, and Lito MC Cassidy, and a wave of new artists like Brray, Noriel, Jay Wheeler, and Myke Towers, to name a few. In other songs, such as the title track, “Guerrero,” “Apunta y Dispara,” and “Siempre Sere,” the Puerto Rican rapper wears his heart on his sleeve, telling raw stories about growing up, the street life, and overcoming many challenges. On road 167, Farruko takes fans on an eclectic journey that includes romantic reggaetón (“My Lova”), hard-hitting perreo (“Baya”), dancehall (“W.F.M.”), reggae (“Jibaro”), trap (“Cucaracha”), and even salsa (“La Bendición”). It kicks off with “Ki,” an instrumental trap song with a motivational speech by Mexican conference speaker and author Daniel Habif, followed by his two hits “Tóxica” and “Pepas.” Like “Pepas,” La 167 includes more EDM gems like “Embalao,” “Helicoptero,” and his focus track “El Incomprendido,” which interpolates Alice Deejay’s 1999 classic “Better Off Alone.” Latin Remix of the Week: David Guetta Gives Farruko's 'Pepas' His Stamp of Approval ![]() ![]() ![]() Personally, I like to double click on the first image, which opens it up in a bigger preview box, then use the arrow keys to cycle through the images and one-star all the ones I want to keep.
